The Action Network is an exciting sports media start-up looking to take sports betting out of the shadows and into the public conversation. We love sports and build products that we, personally use, every day. The sports betting and fantasy sports space is massive ($170bn in the US), growing and underserved from a product and content perspective, and we have the talent, domain expertise and passion to win the space.
We are seeking a frontend engineer who is highly motivated, creative, and excited about joining a fast-paced start-up. This is a hands-on role that will require engineering but also require understanding of the overarching business goal for a given project. A successful candidate will help improve the architecture of our code base, and be able to spec out complex technical challenges.

Responsibilities
- Work with cross functional teams across several time zones to create new and compelling user-facing features
- Act as the technical subject matter expert: Mentoring fellow engineers, demonstrating technical expertise, and leading a small team solving challenging programming and design problems
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of structured analysis and technical design techniques
- Ship code to production frequently, often daily
- Architect efficient and reusable front-end modules and systems
- Investigate issues and anomalies reported via error monitoring tools, such as Rollbar
- Drive adherence to SEO optimized standards, APIs and governance across the Action Network site
Ideal Qualifications
- Strong affinity for performance testing and web vitals metrics (FCP, LCP, TTI, CLI)Experience with cloudfront or a comparable CDN
- Strong understanding of caching best practices
- Experience with static site generators like Nextjs or Gatsby
- Familiarity with serverless technology, such as AWS or Google Cloud Platform
- Experience with a headless CMS, such as ButterCMS, Contentful, Sanity, Netlify or Wordpress
- Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and/or the related ecosystem of container tools
- Experience with supporting an editorial team and large amounts of daily content
- Passionate sports fan with strong understanding of sports betting and/or fantasy sports
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Engineering or equivalent work experience
- Comfortable working with our tech stack: React, NextJs, Flow, Emotion, Context-API, Hooks, and ButterCMS
- Overall 3+ years of software development experience
- Proven track record of building and delivering modern web applications
- Experience working with a design system and adhering to design standards
- An understanding of SEO best practices and techniques
- Ability to write components and modules that are externally configurable through a CMS
- Knowledge of current industry trends and practices like css-in-js libraries, state management libraries like Redux and GraphQL, and React hooks
- Experience integrating with RESTful APIs and micro services
- Self-motivated. Must be able to anticipate problems, spot opportunities and take a proactive approach to responsibilities
- Solid secure coding practices including good design documentation, unit testing, peer code reviews
- Ability to deliver projects on time, with high quality, and within budget
- Thrive in a fast-paced work environment and ability to set and meet aggressive goals
